From the mother of a girl adopted at 2:My daughter came home on August 5th. She turned 2 on July 13th. I'm a single mom with a 7 year-old bio son, Zach. When Maria first came home I thought I was going to be in for a month or so of sleepless nights, but she proved me wrong and has slept through the night since day 1! (Now, if I could just get her brother to do the same...!)
The first few days she didn't eat a whole lot but did drink quite a bit of water and formula. I was told to have baby food and soft toddler foods on hand. Well, those ended up going to my niece because Maria wanted
everything WE were eating, and boy, can she eat!As far as adjustment goes, she attached to me immediately, and only went to me and her big brother for the first
few weeks. She then would go to my mom and sister, but no men. She has only been here just shy of three months and she now goes to all family members and some strangers! She has a great sense of humor and gives lots of kisses and hugs to me and her brother. She did throw some
major tantrums for a while, but I think she's figuring out that since she doesn't get the attention any more it's really not worth the effort. If Zach and I ignore her, she will stop within two minutes and come over to me, smiling, with her arms reached out to be picked up.She started day care at the end of Sept. so we are now going through that adjustment. The daycare workers say
that she only cries when I leave her in the morning and that for the rest of the day she follows directions and
keeps up with the other kids. She is in the room with the other two-year-olds (I had my choice on that - I could have put her in the baby room with kids her own size, and some bigger, but I wanted her to have the stimulation) and she's doing great.Like any kid, she has her moments and like any mom, I have mine! She and her brother get along great for the most part. He loves to help take care of her and to make her laugh. I know someday I'll kick myself for saying this, but the sibling rivalry and bickering is music to my ears!!!
All I can say is that I'm very impressed at how well she has adjusted and I'd do it again in a heartbeat (though I
may wait until the right man comes along before I attempt to bring another one home!)I also just love all the comments I get, no matter where I am, about how pretty and beautiful she is, and how delicate her features are. She is now 27 months and still only weighs 20# and is 30" tall!
