SUPPORT GROUPS, HOMELAND TOURS, REGIONAL GROUPS...

I will add other regional support groups to this section as I learn of them. So, if you know of any India and/or adoption related support groups in your area, please let me know. Thanks, Beth

 ICHILD REGIONAL SUPPORT GROUPS:

MIDWEST ICHILD

Midwest ICHILD is a support group made up of families in the Midwest (WI, MN, IOWA, IL, IND, OHIO, MI, MO) These families have adopted (or are in process) from India and the subcontinent. However, we welcome families who have adopted children from other countries as well. We currently have members who have children from Ethiopia, China, Korea etc...

Each summer we have our Midwest ICHILD HERITAGE CAMP!  www.mwihc.org

NORTHWEST ICHILD

NWichild: a mailing list specifically for ICHILD families living in the Great Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia). NWichild is an off-shoot of ICHILD (India Child) which is a list for all persons interested in issues concerning adoption from India (also Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal). NWichild-owner/administrator is Terry. For more information, mail to: IndiaMom3@aol.com or NWichild-owner@yahoogroups.com

NE ICHILD

NEiChild is the New England affiliate of  Ichild. NEiChild exists to encourage adoption from India, and to provide information, support, resources and social activities and events for people who are involved with adoption from India.
NEiChild was started from an email list developed by a few parents who had met through their local adoption agency. They "met" other people on the Internet through iChild, an international email list and web site providing information and support for people involved with adoption from India, and decided to get together.
NEiChild is not affiliated with any Agency, or organization. It is just people trying to make things a little better.
NEiChild believes that adoption is a great way to build a family.
If you would like to become a member of the NEiChild email list, go to the ICHILD Listserv listing

OTHER REGIONAL SUPPORT GROUPS:

Mid Valley Adoptive Families in Corvallis, Oregon

We have families from the following counties:Benton Linn Polk Marian Lincoln Lane.
Adoptive families are becoming more noticable now in this area!!!  Finally it's not so uncommon to see a family with kids who are obviously from another country or culture.  Back in the early 80s, we were still a novelty here.  And the big question back then was "Are those kids yours?"  Or, this is even better: "You do day care or foster care or something?" We've come a long way.
So send those mid valley people our way. Judi K-O

FRIENDS OF INDIA (Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Friends of India (FOI) is a group of families linked by our experience with adoption from India.  Our purpose is to provide Indian cultural activities for our children and a support network for parents and prospective parents.  These activities are being directed by a committee of parents.

Our major event of the year is a "Children's Day" celebration held each November.  Children's Day activities include Indian dance, storytelling, a bazaar of Indian clothing and crafts, and a wonderful Indian meal.  We also get together in the spring or summer for a picnic at a park.

HOMELAND TOURS:

NEW  ICHILD'er Chris Futia now leads a small HOMELAND tour for families who've adopted from India. Please contact Chris!

HOMELAND TOURS: THE TIES PROGRAM: www.AdoptiveFamilyTravel.comm

The Ties Program has created special adoptive family homeland visits to Korea, Peru, Paraguay and Chile for the past 8 years. In December 2000, the first group of adoptive families participated in INDIAN TIES. Forty three of us traveled from across the United States, leaving just after Christmas for a stay of about two weeks. After spending a week or so visiting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, each family has the opportunity to travel (with assistance) to the part of India where their children were born. Then, we regroup again at the end to process this life changing experience. We have had so much request for Inidan Ties that we have decided to make it an annual event. For more information, email BeccaPiper@aol.com or visit us at www.AdoptiveFamilyTravel.com
